Book Excerpt:
I was drifting, unaware of
the passage of time. Slowly I returned to consciousness, welcoming it as one
reborn. My mind once again filled with thoughts and sensations; my eyelids
fluttered open involuntarily. I saw looming trees above me, stars in the sky.
It was bitter cold out here. Here…I didn't know where here was. I came to
understand that I was sprawled limply on the ground, hot with a sticky wetness
beneath certain areas of my body. My body…I was completely nude.
Shifting into an upright
position, I felt the wind around me pick up and rustle my hair. The ground was
warm and damp where I'd left it. How long I'd been lying there, I couldn't be
sure. I placed both my palms on the ground and pushed myself to my feet.
Shivering, I covered my exposed midriff with my arms only to find them ice
cold. I dropped them immediately. Needless to say, I needed clothes. But...what
had I been wearing before? I couldn't recall any of the events that had brought
me to this place of trees and dim starlight. That's a scary thought: being lost
and naked and not knowing how you came to a place or how long you'd been there.
But it was nothing compared to the barely illuminated sight on the ground
before me. There lay something so putrid and repulsive that I screamed with a
force I never knew I had in me.
I was standing near the
lifeless body of a young girl.
The corpse was as naked as
I. It lay in a mangled, bloody heap inches away from my bare feet. After
sinking back down to the dampened ground, it took every ounce of willpower I had
not to let myself vomit. I had to get away. I knew it. But I couldn't budge.
With shaking fingers, I reached out to wipe the matted, reddish-blonde hair
from the girl's petrified face. I was staring into my own eyes.
It took me about a minute
to comprehend this. I looked at my hands. I felt my hair, my face, and every
inch of my body. I was still in my own skin, but this…this thing was a perfect twin. She radiated some warmth, and her face was
mine. Her entire body was like mine—exactly like mine—except for the stab
wounds all over hers. There was a white sticky substance in the pubic area,
which led me to believe she'd been raped. That I'd been raped.

This is not your normal ghost story. Again Arielle Strauss has amazed me with her talent as well as how she captivates her readers! This is the first in The Wraith series and would recommend that you read this one before the second one. I must say that she takes ghost stories to a whole other level. Captivating, seat gripping, a series not to miss out on!

Normally not my typical read but was very impressed with this book! Loved how it kept me glued to my reader as well as on the edge. There wasn't a page that I read that I wasn't thinking "OMG"! Arielle Strauss is talent to say the least. She knows how to take a plot and make it run and capture the attention of any reader!
