Belle’s life spirals out of control. She loses everything that is dear to her
and is forced to flee to the other side of the world where she meets Andrea, a

Can they break through
the complications of past hurts and a long-distance relationship to make it
work or will one terrifying night in Paris end it before it had a chance to
begin?

EXCERPTS:
Belle hadn’t seen Ben properly in weeks. It wasn’t cause for
concern. He had a gruelling case at work that had been demanding his time. He’d
been spending long days at the office, and their precious weekends had been
reduced to an hour here and a quick lunch there before his phone would ring and
he’d have to leave.
She’d seen him grow preoccupied and irritable, which wasn’t
entirely unusual for his line of work. He was a criminal barrister and had had
cases like this before. The job was demanding, stressful, but Benjamin Turner
was brilliant at what he did. He was the most ambitious person she knew.
That’s what the bus ride was for. She wasn’t going home to
Darling Street that Friday afternoon. She was going to Ben’s house to surprise
him. She’d cook his favourite meal and have a scotch on the rocks ready for
when he walked through the door. Maybe she’d wear nothing but her apron.
Belle brushed aside a ribbon of hair that had freed itself
from her braids and smiled politely at a lady walking by as she waited at the
bus stop on York Street. The young mother was pushing a pram with her baby
swaddled protectively inside the carriage, insulated against the hustle and
bustle of rush hour.
Belle loved babies, adored children; couldn’t wait to have
her own. It made her glance instinctively down at the sparkling rock on her
finger and she smiled as the sun’s rays reflected off the diamonds. It still
took her breath away and always seemed to gleam more brightly than the last
time she gazed at it. She gazed at it often.
The 443 bus rumbled up York Street. It came to a stop with a
shriek of the brakes beside the line of waiting commuters. Belle boarded the
bus and swiped her Opal card against the reader. There was only standing room
left and she shuffled down the aisle, reaching for the railing above to steady
herself. The bus surged forward and joined the noisy traffic on the Western
Distributor, where Pyrmont lay just on the other side of the city, beneath the
ANZAC Bridge.
The bus dropped her at Harris Street, and on her way to
Ben’s, she stopped in at the little Italian deli perched on the corner. She ran
a mental list of ingredients through her mind and plucked jars, packets and
tins from the shelves. She filled her basket, paid for the items and stepped
back into the fading afternoon light.
