Josie
Shepherd loves running free, with no one and nothing to tie her
down—until a new job at a kennel introduces her to both an
unexpected friend and a vicious, abused dog named Cain.
When
Josie stumbles upon the body of a murdered woman, she runs to Deputy
Gordon Wolfe, a disfigured man hiding behind his badge. His shy smile
and affection for dogs make her reconsider what she’s running from.
Now she’s on the run from a serial killer and her own heart. But when her friend is abducted and Cain appears to be the murder weapon, Josie’s attempt to save them both lands her in the killer’s lair. Josie’s strength and Cain’s loyalty are tested to the limit as they fight for their lives. Facing a killer is one thing, but facing her love for Gordon is Josie’s greatest challenge.

EXCERPTS:
I went
to Gordon, holding out my hand. “Dance with me.”
Gordon’s
cheek went red and for the first time in days he turned away from me.
“I don’t dance. Never learned.”
“I’ll
show you how.”
“People
will stare.”
There
were, at most, a dozen people, in the room. “You proposed to me in
front of a lot more people than this.”
“That
was different.”
“How?”
He stole
a peek at me then looked away. “I didn’t plan it. It just
happened.”
“Are
these the same people who have been staring all your life?”
He
nodded. My Gordon was a big man, a wolf of a man, but graceful in his
stature and strength. People would have stared regardless, but he
would always believe it was the birthmark they were looking at.
“I’ll
make an idiot out of myself.”
“I
would never let that happen. All you have to do is put your arms
around me. I know you can do that. And if they stare, so what? Screw
’em, Gordon. Who gives a shit what they think?” I winced—my
voice was loud enough to carry across the room. I had gone and done
it. They were staring at us now.
I gave
his hand a tug and he followed me to the dance floor. Feet dragging
and head hanging, but it was better than nothing. Tucker started the
music. He picked a good one, Take My Breath Away. Gordon put his arms
around my waist and I put mine around his neck.
“Sway
in a circle and keep your feet to the outside of mine.”
He did,
with beauty and grace, just like I knew he would. “I think we found
our song,” he whispered against my hair.
We held
on to each other for a moment after the music ended and shared a
kiss. Light applause broke out. They were staring, all right, but
there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
