EXCERPT

The Rover’s Son smiles, but he doesn’t say anything else to me as he kisses Kaida’s hand and then strides into the gloom.

For a long minute, we stand still, staring after him in silence. Then she shivers, a convulsive shudder, and I shove her toward the wagon, almost throwing her into it.

She lands with a soft grunt and I stare at her in the sol light. Outraged doesn’t begin to describe what I am right now. And from the way her chin goes up and her shoulders go back, she knows it.

“What the hell was he doing in my wagon?” I snap, “Did he touch anything?”

“You mean aside from me,” she demand, her voice bitter, and I freeze in my quick scan of the interior of my home. Stare at her hard until her gaze drops.

"Tell me what happened." I say, and she looks away.

"He showed up a little bit ago. Wanted to talk."

"Was Cedric still here?"

Her gaze, startled and a little bit afraid, swings up to me. Good. Let her be afraid.
